Securing Your Investment: Simple Steps to Protect Your Dock and Boat from Winter Weather

As the beautiful fall foliage blankets the shores of Lake Eufaula, the change in season signals a critical time for every property owner. Winter preparation isn't just about protecting your dock and boat; it's a vital, direct action that helps us Preserve, Promote, and Protect our beloved lake.

Taking the time now ensures your property doesn't become a source of pollution or debris later. Here are simple, practical steps you can take to prepare for lower temperatures and fluctuating water levels.

1. Preserve: Eliminating Potential Pollution

Your first step is to remove all items that could be blown or washed into the water—a direct act of preservation.

  • Remove All Loose Items: High winds are common in late fall and winter. Store everything from chairs, umbrellas, fishing gear, and floats safely onshore or in a secure shed. A loose item is debris waiting to happen.

  • Secure Chemical and Fuel Storage: If you keep any cleaning supplies, oils, or fuel tanks on your dock, move them to a secure, dry, indoor location. This prevents accidental spills or leaks into the lake, which is the ultimate act of protection.

  • Final Debris Check: Walk your entire shoreline and dock one last time. Pick up any small pieces of litter, abandoned fishing line, or plastic scraps that have washed up.

2. Protect: Winterizing Your Vessel

Boat neglect is the number one cause of costly winter damage and a source of potential environmental hazards. Proper winterization is essential for protecting the lake.

  • The Freeze-Out: Water left in your engine block, pumps, and plumbing lines will expand when frozen, causing major cracks and leaks. If you don't know how to properly drain and fill these systems with antifreeze, hire a marine professional. This step is non-negotiable for protection against expensive repairs and possible fuel spills.

  • Fuel Stabilization: Run your boat on fuel stabilizer for several minutes to ensure the treated fuel reaches the entire engine system. This prevents corrosion and makes spring start-up easier.

  • Remove and Store Batteries: Store batteries indoors, away from extreme temperatures, and place them on a maintenance charger.

3. Promote: Maintaining Structural Integrity

A well-maintained dock is a proud part of the Lake Eufaula experience, helping to promote the lake's beauty and safety.

  • Prepare for Water Fluctuations: As the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers may adjust water levels, ensure your dock's winches, cables, and tie-downs are functioning correctly. They need to be secure, yet flexible enough to rise or fall smoothly with the water, preventing structural stress.

  • Inspect Electrical Lines: Check all shore power cords and dock wiring for wear, cracking, or damage. Repairing frayed wires prevents electrical hazards and is key to protecting the environment.

  • Check the Decking: Tighten loose screws and replace any splintered or rotten boards. A sound dock is safe for people, and it prevents decaying material from breaking off into the water.

By taking these proactive steps today, you are upholding the mission of Friends of Lake Eufaula. Thank you for doing your part to Preserve, Promote, and Protect our invaluable lake for generations to come!
