Known far and wide as the Bass Fishing Capital of the World, Lake Eufaula (also known as Walter F. George Lake) is more than just a body of water. Stretching along the Chattahoochee River between Alabama and Georgia, its 45,000 acres of water and 640 miles of shoreline form the lifeblood of our local ecosystem, economy, and community heritage.

However, natural treasures like Lake Eufaula don't stay pristine by accident. They require active care, protection, and advocacy.

1. Protecting Ecosystems Downstream: Watching the Upstream Flow

Water quality at Lake Eufaula doesn't start at the lake's edge; it depends on the entire Chattahoochee River basin upstream. A major example of why vigilance is necessary occurred when issues at Phenix City’s wastewater treatment plant released undertreated sewage into the Chattahoochee River. High levels of E. coli bacteria were detected flowing down the river—a threat that flows 36 miles directly into the headwaters of Lake Eufaula.

To tackle these watershed-wide threats, Friends of Lake Eufaula (FOLE) works in partnership with Chattahoochee Riverkeeper and supports their conservation efforts. Together, our groups form a powerful front against downstream pollution by:

• Monitoring Upstream Threats: Combining resources to track municipal and industrial discharges miles upstream, ensuring regulatory compliance before issues hit local waters.

• Water Quality Sampling: Leveraging scientific testing protocols across the river basin to identify contamination spikes early and alert the public.

• Advocating for Clean Water Standards: Holding regulatory entities (like the Alabama Department of Environmental Management) accountable to push for prompt infrastructure repairs and long-term watershed protection.
  

2. Driving the Local Economy: Major Tournaments and Tourism

Outdoor recreation is a massive economic engine for Southeast Alabama, powered largely by elite competitive angling:

• Massive Tournament Hub: Lakepoint State Park regularly hosts more than 80 to 90 fishing tournaments every single year. From local club trails to massive national circuits featuring fields of up to 300 boats, Lakepoint acts as one of the premier tournament launch points in the southeastern United States.

• Regional Impact: Lake Eufaula is part of the Alabama Black Belt tourism region, an area that generates over $3.8 billion in total economic impact and supports more than 45,000 local jobs annually through outdoor recreation, hunting, and fishing.

• Barbour County Impact: The steady influx of anglers and eco-tourists injects critical dollars directly into Barbour and Russell counties, keeping local outfitters, restaurants, and hospitality workers thriving year-round.

Lake Eufaula is home to a complex web of life. Beyond its world-famous largemouth bass, the lake and the surrounding Eufaula National Wildlife Refuge provide sanctuary for over 300 species of birds, American alligators, river otters, and native plants. Unchecked pollution, invasive aquatic weeds, and habitat disruption threaten these delicate food chains.

• Practice "Leave No Trace" Boating and Fishing: Secure all trash on your vessel, dispose of fishing line properly in monofilament recycling bins, and prevent fuel or oil spills into the water.

• Stop the Spread of Invasive Species: Always clean, drain, and dry your boat, trailer, and gear before moving between different bodies of water to avoid spreading invasive plants like hydrilla or giant salvinia.

• Manage Shoreline Runoff: If you live near the water, reduce pesticide and fertilizer use on lawns to prevent nutrient surges that trigger toxic algae blooms.

• Participate in Local Cleanups: Volunteer for seasonal lake and shoreline cleanup days organized by local community groups and watershed partners.
