Lake Eufaula: A History of Progress and Preservation

For those of us who call this area home, Lake Eufaula is more than just a body of water-it’s the heart of our community. Its official name, Walter F. George Lake, honors the Georgia senator who championed its creation, but to us, it will always be our beloved Lake Eufaula. Our story is one of transformation, beginning in the mid-20th century with a monumental vision for the Chattahoochee River.

The Rivers and Harbors Act of 1944

The idea to build a lock and dam on this section of the river was officially authorized by the Rivers and Harbors Act of 1944. This legislation paved the way for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to begin the ambitious project. Construction on the Walter F. George Lock and Dam began in 1957. The goal was multi-faceted: to provide hydroelectric power, improve navigation for barges, and offer vital flood control for communities along the river. The dam was a colossal undertaking, and upon its completion in 1963, its lock lift—at 88 feet high—was the second-highest east of the Mississippi River.

The impoundment of the river behind the dam created a new landscape. The reservoir, with a surface area of over 45,000 acres, forever changed the region. It extended north for about 85 miles and created a staggering 640 miles of shoreline. This new body of water, officially named by the Alabama legislature as Lake Eufaula in 1963, quickly became a haven for outdoor enthusiasts. Its reputation as the "Big Bass Capital of the World" drew anglers from across the country, turning it into a premier fishing destination and a major economic driver for our towns.

Our Mission: Preservation Through Action

At Friends of Lake Eufaula, we recognize that this legacy of progress comes with a responsibility to preserve the lake for the future. The lake's health is a direct reflection of our community's commitment to environmental stewardship. We know firsthand the challenges it faces, from siltation and pollution to the constant threat of invasive species.

Founded in 2009, we are a nonprofit organization with a mission to promote, preserve, and educate people about the natural beauty and historical significance of Lake Eufaula. We work tirelessly with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and other partners to tackle these issues head-on. Our community cleanup days are a testament to our collective dedication, where volunteers come together to restore the shoreline and protect the diverse ecosystem that calls the lake home.
