Keep Safe on the Lake: Wear Your Life Jacket

Brad Moore, President of FOLE, and the Corps of Engineers

Lake Eufaula is a beloved recreational destination, offering countless opportunities for boating, fishing, and swimming. However, with these enjoyable activities comes the serious responsibility of water safety.

A Tragic Reality

In recent years, Lake Eufaula has witnessed a heartbreaking number of drowning incidents. These tragedies are a stark reminder of the importance of water safety and the life-saving power of personal flotation devices (PFDs).

A Community Effort

To address this pressing issue, Friends of Lake Eufaula (FOLE) has partnered with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to raise awareness about water safety and encourage the use of PFDs. As part of this initiative, FOLE has provided awareness signs that have been strategically placed at four popular Corps landings: Hatchechubbee, White Oak, Highland Park, and Cotton Hill.

The Power of PFDs

A PFD, or life jacket, is a simple yet essential piece of safety equipment that can significantly reduce the risk of drowning. By wearing a PFD, you increase your chances of staying afloat and being rescued in the event of an accident.

Key Features of a Good PFD:

  • U.S. Coast Guard Approved: Ensure your PFD is certified by the U.S. Coast Guard. This guarantees it meets specific safety standards.

  • Proper Fit: A PFD should fit snugly but comfortably. It should not ride up around your neck or torso.

  • Visibility: Choose a brightly colored PFD with reflective strips to increase visibility on the water, especially in low-light conditions.

  • Type of PFD: Different types of PFDs are available, including inflatable, standard, and specialized PFDs for specific activities like kayaking or paddleboarding. Select a PFD that suits your needs and the type of water activity you'll be doing.

Let’s Make a Difference Together

We can all play a role in making Lake Eufaula a safer place for everyone. By taking the following steps, we can help prevent future tragedies:

  • Wear Your PFD: Always wear a properly fitted PFD while on the water.

  • Educate Others: Share water safety tips with friends, family, and visitors to the lake.

  • Monitor Children: Children should always be supervised by a responsible adult while in or near the water.

  • Learn CPR: Knowing CPR can be a lifesaver in emergency situations.

  • Avoid Alcohol: Alcohol impairs judgment and coordination, making it more difficult to stay safe on the water.

By working together, we can create a safer and more enjoyable experience for everyone who visits Lake Eufaula. Let’s commit to making water safety a priority and honoring the lives lost by always wearing our life jackets.

Remember: Stay Safe. Wear Your Life Jacket.
